General:
Most end users will use
a password and user name to sign into the system. This is the first measure used to authenticate you and
ensure there is no unauthorized access to your internet connection. While Thai-Fi systems are designed to
only allow authorized users to sign onto a venue's wireless system, it is possible for a very determined
person to intercept the radio signal and view a user's activities while surfing the internet or sending/receiving
email. Some installations will make use of built in encryption software, which we will continue to update as
these encryption techniques evolve.
Basic Wi-Fi Precautions:
There are a number of simple
steps that you can take depending on where you are using a wi-fi connection that won't cost you any more than 5
minutes of your time and a little vigilance.
At Home / Office:
1) Change the default SSID name to anything but the default
2) Change the username and password on your router and AP
3) Don't broadcast your SSID
- You can't ride what you can't see. This will require you to manually program the location into
your computer, but only once.
4) Enable WEP
- While not strong enough to stop a very determined hacker with half a day to spare, this will solve
about 99% of your security problems.
5) For businesses, consider using additional access control precautions such as IP or MAC address filtering.
Public / Shared:
Though you can not control the access point in these situations, There are still options to ensure that no one
will see what you are sending and receiving.
1) SSL and other encryption technolgies can be used for e-mail (more info)
2) A VPN (Virtual Private Network) is the most secure way to use any network. See more information on VPNs and how you can get one to the right.

Virtual Private Network (VPN)
For those of our customers who have particular concerns regarding this issue, Thai-Fi offers an optional
service at a very small monthly charge for a secured and encrypted method of using the internet called a "Virtual Private Network" or "VPN".
A VPN provides you with a very safe and encrypted method of surfing the net and using email so that anyone who should attempt to intercept
your signal, would receive a meaningless encrypted message which they will not be to read. The sign up process takes about 3 minutes. Should
you wish to sign up for this optional service, please click here.

General Precautions
1) Require a password on your computer.
- Like locking your car doors, this simple step is also most effective
2) Veep Virus protection up to date
3) Make sure that sensetive data collection pages are SSL encrypted
- Any website which asks for your credit card information or for sensitive activities such
as e-banking, use a very secure encryption technique called secured socket layer or "SSL" technology, Whether using a
wired or wireless system to access the internet, end users should take care when entering
sensitive information onto a website and ensure that site is secured via SSL technology. To determine if the site you are
at is secured by SSL, look to see that the address of the page begins with the title https:// instead of the standard
http://. Also check to make sure that there is a small lock displayed in the bottom right of your browser.
